Nurturing your career

Our team is committed to nurturing and mentoring talent. We have strong representation on industry bodies and groups, and around a third of our staff are chartered. Our practical, hands-on approach and ‘no doors’ policy means there’s no ‘managers managing managers’ and our employees can cross-pollinate ideas to gain new perspectives and create innovative solutions.

We offer a variety of opportunities for you to develop your skills and the freedom to explore areas you are interested in. From on-the-job learning through to secondments, mentoring, coaching, essential skills courses, and leadership initiatives, we’ll support you to develop technically and professionally at every level.

Our Board Internship Programme allows future leaders to gain governance exposure, preparing them for greater responsibilities.

Engineering

Woods offers multiple career and development pathways, including options for engineers without a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Our Graduate Development Programme supports staff from graduate level through to CPEng and all Engineering New Zealand membership levels. As an accredited Professional Development Partner, Woods can recommend candidates for Full Membership upon programme completion. Engineers with a Diploma, BEngTech, or overseas qualifications not recognised under the Washington Accord are supported to achieve Knowledge Assessment through Engineering NZ, enabling progression toward CPEng. Staff have access to mentors and an external assessor for feedback on applications before submission. Woods covers all Engineering NZ fees and application costs for permanent employees. We also run at least three core competency training events annually and offer other ongoing development opportunities, including support for further study.

Surveying

Woods offers a clear development pathway to support employees from assistant, technician, or graduate level through to professional accreditation. Assistants and technicians are encouraged to complete the NZ Diploma in Surveying (Level 6) through Toi Ohomai or Unitec, with fees covered by Woods for permanent staff — and the programme is designed to be completed alongside full-time work. Our nationally recognised Graduate Development Programme for Licensing gives graduates hands-on experience across all compulsory and optional components required for cadastral licensing. Woods provides full mentoring support for Cadastral Law Exams and Professional Interviews, and covers all related exam and application fees for permanent staff. We also host regular in-house training sessions called Spatial Spiels, covering a wide range of topics in surveying and land development to support Continued Professional Development. In addition, Woods covers the annual costs of Survey and Spatial NZ membership and Cadastral Surveyor Licences for all permanent team members.
